Announcing DWFastrac™ |
|
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
DWFastrac is a tool for developing and maintaining a data warehouse. It provides a development environment and an execution environment for the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process. It has two modes. In its “unstructured” mode it is similar to well-known ETL tools from major vendors. Its strength is in its “structured” mode, whose distinctive benefits greatly accelerate both development and operation of the data warehouse.
Development Environment
DWFastrac guides the programmer through the construction of a comprehensive metadata repository that describes all the tables from all types of operational systems, and any other non-relational data sources. It analyzes source data to determine data types and dimension members. It assigns surrogate keys wherever needed and matches up related data from different sources, overcoming differences in the original primary keys and other identification. Many transformation algorithms are built in, and custom algorithms can be added easily.
Execution Environment
DWFastrac provides an execution environment that sequences the many individual activities that are necessary in a nightly update of the data warehouse. It overcomes two widespread problems that afflict data warehouses set up by inexperienced designers. The first is that volumes of data grow so fast that reload times become excessive and threaten the viability of the project. DWFastrac overcomes this by identifying changes to the source system, so that the time to refresh the data warehouse is reduced to the logical minimum time. The second? It is a fact of life that ETL processes crash because unexpected problems arise in the data arriving from the source systems, usually as a result of design changes that have not been communicated, or because the source systems are tolerating data errors that the data warehouse cannot tolerate. DWFastrac’s execution environment provides comprehensive monitoring, diagnostics, and restart facilities so that it can be restarted from the point of failure without unnecessary repetition or delays or loss of data.
